View Full Version : Best Server Hosts

I get quite a few questions regarding the CSGZ server host. So everyoen knows, it's XGS gaming servers (http://www.xgamingservers.com/).

I would not put our host in the "cheap" catagory. The server alone is $135 a month and that does not include this forum - it's hosted elsewhere for an additional fee.

IMO the most important thing (outside of the obvious, your ping) is the support the hosting company offers. Again, IMO you get what you pay for. With a cheap host (under $100/month) you'll get crappy and sporadic service. I can call our host pretty much 24/7 and get a real person on the phone or a call back within minutes. Any problems that arise (there aren't that many to begin with) get resolved quickly.

Anyone ever used a server host that they would suggest to someone looking for a counter strike source server?

Well I just got my server today from here (http://www.affordablegameservers.com) . Its $30 a month for a 20 slot. This is my first server and the guy who owns the company gives out his Yahoo IM name so you can ask him all ur questions. He is being super helpful and patient. He will answer every question I have. So I would say the support here is a definite +A. So far my ping here has been the same as it is on the csgz server, but I havnt had more than 2 players.

If anyone is interested in trying it, the ip is 205.234.210.36:27015

Let em know how it goes when you get 15 - 20 people playing on it. Are you running bots or any admin mods yet?

Soldat
he isnt running bots on it... and there is no one in it right now so i will go on it someother time... i am guessing ur gunna have huge registry issues (i know our fa clan server had issues because it was a cheap server) but other than that u should have fun with it hehe.

Theeda
Eye,

How much do you pay for your web hosting? Who hosts it?

*DUW*KyleBraegelman
Well the reason that there are no bots is because, the owner told me I could just put it in with the Mani Admin Plugin(which I have), but he said that in his experiences they always crash the server. Plus Im now entering day 2 of my 3 day trial. Im considering lowing the player slots to make it easier on my 16 year old pockets. If anyone has any recommendations for the server please let me know, either a post(I think eye prefers posts) or a private message. :)

powweb.com...it's about $100 year. The forum software (vBulletin) was $160.

I have numerous hosting accounts...this forum will probably move away from powweb in the next 4 - 6 months.

What do you have planned for after the move?

Flitch
World Domination!!!

[FU2]InYourEye
either a post(I think eye prefers posts)

Yes - posts leave a record of events and will help people who just read here. PM's do not.

Plus, I get about 15 PM"s a day here from monkey's who don't read my signature. It's a PITA deleting them all:)

Regarding bots and server crashes - keep the number of bots low (4 or less) and make sure they are set up to leave when people join. If you don't run bots you will have an empty server more times than not. Trust me on that one, I lived it for weeks and weeks.

No real big plans, just want something a little more stable. powweb is a shared hosting environment and as we grow I'll want a dedicated host. I may add a few additional game servers (BF2....) which will bring more people to the forums which will increase the server load. It's fine now, just thinking of the future.

There's a master plan:)

Have you ever pondered the thought of purchasing your own servers?

YeLLoW
yea, and then we can run it out of jimmys house!

wait a minute...

AHAHHAHA

or a crappy host downtown chicago... or outsource...

Oh wait... been there, done that...

It's more of a hassle than it's worth. Jimmy's been up and down that road before.

Severs are cheap - it's the connection that will kill you.

I thought that high class buisness servers were near $4,000. How much does a 100mbit connection cost a month?

That's cheap (I'm rich if you haven't figured that out;) )

100????

I wouldn't even guess. Did you mean 10?

Either way you'll want a connection that rivals a T1. Anything less will just piss people off when the server gets full.

Back in the day JimmyCarter hosted the server in his basement, that's where thias all started. There are some perks with being your own host but in my opinion the negatives outweigh the plusses.

Well now that the DUW server has been up for nearly 10 months i'd just like to say how pleased I am with it. No issues as far as registry or any of that stuff. The longest down times are when the update screws with mani and the service is within the hour. Unless at night, the host is a single person but he keeps very good track of all the servers, and I haven't run into an issue he can't solve.

Pretty good for 20 slot $30 a month.
