View Full Version : Anyone have a geforce 6600 card?

Mr.
Just wondering if anyone has one of these cards and how it's working out for them? I'm primarily interested in performance running CS:S with HDR enabled.

=/ i can't use it...it blows so much >.> everyone should donate 2 grand to the help Dave build a new gaming rig fund XP

Mr.
ok, since no-one has one, does anyone know the difference between 6600gt with 128mb ram vs 6600 with 256mb ram? The non-gt version is about $20-80 cheaper depending on the make.

DarkKnyght
the difference is that there is more Ram powering the graphics card so your going to get better gaming speeds from it while your using maximum settings of the system

Mr.
But surely that's only from games that use a lot of big textures like RPGs? From what I understand and have read from quite a few reviews is that the GT is the model to go for since it has more raw computing power and so speed wins out over memory.(?)

generally nvidia cards with gt postscripts are the same in every way to their non-gt counterparts, except that a gt card will have extra vertex and fragment processing pipelines. i dont know if i can recall correctly but i think for the 6000 series, gt models had 6 extra vertex pipelines, 2 extra fragment pipelines, and something about how the frag pipes had a few pieces of optimizing functionality involving reprocessing specifically for shadow generation or something. based on this, i would say that you would notice a 6600 gt 128 will run faster than a 6600 256 in most cases. that said, any games that have a huge number of textures that need to be loaded are going to bog down the system with the 128mg chip more so than the 256, since it will need alot more virtual memory.

in my opinion, i wouldnt get either of them. get at least a 6800 gt. but thats me :)

Mr.
the main thing is I don't want to spend a lot of money on a card since it'll have to be agp. I'm hoping to build a new amd-based rig with pci-e sometime next year but I've been aching to put more eye-candy on my current games. I currently have a 9500pro that's showing it's age and don't want to spend 300-400 on a card that I'll only use for about 5-6months.

Luckily bio pointed me in the direction of the Sapphire x800gt which is 256-bit and has 256mb ram for about the same price as a 6600gt which is only 128-bit and 128mb ram. So I'm thinkning about the x800gt now.

-.- i only have a Geforce FX 5900 128 NOW THATS AN OLDIE!!!!

Mr.
I beleive the 9500pro came out before your card.

I'm sad to say but I have a Geforce 4200Ti 128MB. I want a new card but I think I'll just wait till i get a new mobo with PCI-Express.

Mr.
yeah, I was thinking the same but unfortunately switching to pci-e would probably mean having to get new memory and a new cpu. So as a temporary measure I decided to forget nvidia altogether and stick to ati and bought Sapphire x800gt (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102619). Nice thing is that it's fully capable of o/c at least 10-15% straight out of the box. So I'll post later what I think of the card.

soz know almost nothing about the guts of a machine...i have a GeForce FX5500 question: is this an old kinda card and if so has anyone got any reccomendations? bearing in mind im using on board sound or should i get a sound card 1st

Mr.
Well, I just recently upgraded my old 9500pro to a x800gt and I'm loving it! Going from 8x6 with mid- to low-settings to 1024x768 with everything on high is such joy. The games I'm currently playing: CS:S (who knew there were so many textures?), DoD:S (same as CS:S), BF2 (most noticeable improvement, damn those tanks and uniforms look good), NFS:MW (no more annoying single-digit FPS), Dawn of War (not a huge difference but no more slow downs during intense battles) and Guild Wars (haven't tried it yet but should be good).

The main problem for me was looking for AGP based cards. So if you're looking for nice AGP replacement but don't want to spend above about $200 (probably around 170quid) then I would recommend Sapphire x800gto which is right on the border. Annoyingly the card I got was the x800gt which has only 8 pixel pipes whereas the GTO has 12 and probably well worth the extra 20 or so above the GT version. I think they released it or got more stock just after I ordered mine. :(

My system specs are:
P4 2.4c (o/c to 2.7)
1GB RAM
Audigy Gamer Sound Card.
Sapphire x800gt

As for choosing a sound card over a graphics card, I would go with the gfx card. On board sound is kinda sucky but there are many cheap alternatives in the Creative lineup. Sound card shouldn't run you more than about $40-50, unless you want a really nice one.

:( poor AGP... it had so much life left!

Try and flash the bios to a 850pe, real easy to do if your card will allow it. It will unlock all 16 pipes in your card.

ya i just finished building my first computer and i used a 6600 and works great so far.

OHAYO!

This thread has been dead a while BUT!

Have you heard of the new "GS" 6800?

It's pretty hawt I must say, and a WAY better buy than a 6600GT (so long as you have PCIx16 :) )

Just put one in my little bros. new computer and it works mighty fine considering it only cost a couple bones.
