angelsdontkill3
I jus got CS and i can get into the game alright but once im in it lags like crazy everytime and i dont know why. Nothing else is running on my computer i cleared bunch of space on my harddrive and defragmented but it still lags??? :(
Tr32k
Whats your system specs? What kind of connection? dial-up? dsl/cable? There could be lots of reasons for lag...
angelsdontkill3
i have roadrunner thats not the reason im wondering if it has something to do with the settings
[FU2]InYourEye
What are your system specs? (video card, processor, memory, etc)
angelsdontkill3
i dunno if i have a video card can i get one or find out if i have one???
Mr.
Go here: http://www.driverheaven.net/
and download Driverheaven Full PC Info tool. Install then run that program and it will give you info on all your system components. It is NOT a benchmarking tool. It will tell you things such as make and type of cpu, sound card, gfx card, memory, et c. Make a note of them then post your findings here.

were do i find the download link for Driverheaven Full PC Info tool on the site u gave me?

lol, dont take it personaly... but im pretty DAMN sure you have a graphics card...

Go into steam and go to settings, make sure the internet connection is on yours.

i have a 56k modem and steam is set to that i tihnk i ned to buy a video card or something
*DUW*KyleBraegelman
Well 56k definitly isnt a dream. What do you usually connect at? If you are connecting at say 42kbps you might want to turn steam down to 33.3kbps. Also type "net_graph 3" in console when you are in a server, tell me your in rate and speed, and also tell me your choke and loss. And as a obvious side note, try running steam and css alone with as few side programs as possible.

THREE CHEERS FOR IGPs + DIALUP!

alright i got a new video card but now everything on my computer is laggy and my cs doesnt work   do i maybe have to adjust something on my computer in the setting to stop this?
Flitch
again we need to know what vid card you have...
Mr.
Yes systme specs are needed. Also make sure that if you're switching makes of cards e.g. ATI for nVidia that you have the correct drivers installed and that all the old drivers are correctly uninstalled.
angelsdontkill3
its a stealth s80 graphics card with a 128 mb of ram
for a PIC version. The video card i had origanly in my computer was intergrated
Tr32k
I'm sure that PCI card is a big jump from integrated but you should have gotten a AGP card if your mobo supports it.
Mr.
I'm guessing your card may not be strong enough to really handle HL2.
What settings are you running the game at? With that kind of card you're going to have to dial everything WWWWAAAAAAYYYYYY down. From what I see on the web it's only equivalent to an ATI 9200. From the system requirements of HL2 your card is at the very minimum of what is needed to run the game.
Try running the game at 8x6 with everything on low and let me know how the fps is. If you want to see your fps in game then type "cl_showfps 2" in console. It should appear in the upper right-hand side of your screen. If the numbers stay contantly red then you're in big trouble. If they are green or yellow then you should be fine.
BeN
My brother is able to run HL2 with 20-40 fps on a 7500 AIW PCI, 800MHZ duron (usually OC'd to 1190 :P ICE BABY) with 512 of pc133 and an old 10gig SCSI drive. lawl :P I'm guessing you got suckered into getting that by some greasy CompUSA rep right? Whatev'... It'll run HL2 fine. If you consider yourself an average computer user, your machine is probably slowed to a crawl by background apps and not hardware limitations. To save you some trouble, backup and format that SOB, stat!
Mr.
Load on your CPU can also take your frames way down. So close any programs in your task bar that are not needed. If you press ctl+alt+del and look at the processes tab, in the column under CPU you'll see two numbers, these numbers represent the percentage load on your cpu. The highest should be "System Idle Process". Don't randomly close processes from that tab as some of them are required by windows and your antivirus software to run properly.
Ben: Does you brother play CS:S online with that setup? If so, how many frames? At what settings?
BeN
He mostly plays Garry's Mod, lawl. But it does alright in CS:S and DOD:S. We're running it extremely lean but have lately been running into problems with it not supporting shaders (B+W2). So I'm going to throw in a 9200 AGP I found rattling around inside some cannon fodder boxes at my Dad's office. That should liven it up a bit with the shader support and whatnot.
Angels, use msconfig to keep those resource theives from ever starting up. If you're not sure how to do that, I'm sure someone else will spell it out for you :)
