View Full Version : Installation problems

I am new to computors, and this may be something simple, but.....I am trying to install counter-strike source with the day of defeat source and half life 2 deathmatch, and when I am in the middle of installing it, usually while the first P.O.S. disk is still in, and error message pops up that says:the cabinet file css2.cab is corrupt and can't be used. This ends my installation prematurely and shuts down the installation, leaving me very pissed off. Someone please tell me how to make this work.

Dr. BIO
have you completely uninstalled all previous attemps? Or downloading it directly without the CD...or making sure the CD is clean and scratchless, etc.?

Yea, complete uninstall is step one. I would go so far to search my pc and delete any "leftover" files after the add/remove programs uninstall.

A clean sweep will do wonders.

thesmurfkiller
what is the easiest way to find all files and delete them?

thesmurfkiller
because it has never completely installed, there is no option to uninstall it that i can find.

Search your PC for files related to the game, especially css2.cab, and delete them.

Do you have Windows XP Home on your PC?

Although it may take longer, you can install from Steam over the internet. Create a Steam account, www.steampowered.com, and register your games with their CD-keys then you'll be able to download them.

Are you sure these are original discs and with no scratches on them?

thesmurfkiller
yeah i just bought the game like 2 days ago and i have windows xp, i'll try to search the files, but when i tried to register it with stam, it said that it has to be installed or something.

thesmurfkiller
how do i download from steam, because it says that it has to be installed when i try to register it.

Mr.
Yup, just download the steam installer, install it, and then register. You will have to have Steam installed anyways if you want to play CS:S and DoD:S online.

Have your cd-keys on hand so that once you have steam installed you can register your games with steam. Once you've done that you can double-click on HL2 in the "My Games" tab and it will begin to download the game. Be warned that it's going to take a while, ~3hours+ depending on your connection since you'll be downloading GBs of data. Obviously installing from the discs would be a lot quicker. It's just another workaround since you're having problems with your discs.

when i try to register my games with steam, a message comes up that says i have to have counter-strike source downloaded before i register it.
