how do u make a server through the internet other than LAN?

or do u have to run a dedicated to do that.

i didnt notice this promblem till nobody joined my room in about 20 mins.

It's better to run a dedicated server which means you'll have to find another machine with which to connect to the server that you created.

I beleive the other type of a server is a "listen" server which will allow you to play from the same machine used to host the server. One advantage of this is that you'll be playing with a ping of 5.

Unless you have an amazing internet connection people are going to ping horribly to your server and that's probably the reason why you never saw anyone join. In addition most peoples' filters are set for "dedicated servers only" just to prevent servers such as the one you were setting up from showing on their server list. I know I do.

Unless you switch to a very popular map such as D2 or run custom maps like fy_iceworld (or any of its variants) I doubt you'll see much traffic in 20mins.

If you really want to run a server then I would rent a game server, they range from about $30-200/month depending on size, location, and server specifications. I doubt you'll get anyone to stay for long on a listen server with the abundant choke problems you'll get, both from the hardware you're using in your computer and your internet connection.

You'd need a dedicated connection probably something like a T1 or higher and a dedicated box for running the server. Basically you're very unlikely to be able to run one from a domestic connection. You'd be better off leasing a server.

Unfortunately, yes, I have run across a lot of hackers. Not as often as I used to which I guess is a good sign. :)

I think he meant people hacking the server, not hacking in cs:s...

If he meant hacking the server then, no, I haven't come across anything related to that if you have your server setup correctly i.e. not leaving a blank or default rcon password.
