What do you want to record?

If you're talking about Source, then you can easily create a demo while playing by typing "record <demoname>" in console while playing. Then "stop" in console when you're done. Then most people use a program called FRAPs (http://www.fraps.com/) to convert the demo into a movie but without sound(?).

I think you can run FRAPs in-game instead of recording a demo but there is a greater performance hit then running the in-game demo command. I think the easiest way to do it is to record a demo. Then when you're done, playback the demo and record the playback using FRAPs.

I cant get the in game thing to work in console. It says unknown command. And also... how can u edit stuff and add music and stuff? Do u just use fraps, do u have to register fraps in order to be able to do it? cause i was plannin on registering it but i just wanna know if its pointless to do, or if u have to do it.

aight wait i think i got it. it said recording demo... then i play for a while and stopped it. so how do i playback the demo?

I don't make movies but I think that a lot of people who do, use some kinda Adobe product, sorry, can't remember exactly which one, and they can add all the special effects and music and stuff like that.

FRAPs is just used to convert the demo file into an avi file instead of extracting it all as jpegs then joining the jpegs together. I'm not sure what extras registering FRAPs will get you. I think with the freeware version you can still convert the demo into a movie file. Maybe there's limitations on resolution?
