View Full Version : Steam connection question.

MartinX
At work my steam is blocked, it will not connect. Is there any way to cheat the network guys and get steam to connect and work?

Mr.
Probably not. You could try changing the ports that STEAM uses to connect but if your network guys are any good they'll have blocked all non-essential ports.

MartinX
When I download STEAM installer it starts and cant connect, how to change ports?

Mr.
Not sure how you could do it from within STEAM, I was just looking at it and there doesn't seem to be a way to change port.

Maybe someone more technical could help?

Shimpi
Nope. You can always open up the commandline and use the connection command to specify IP:port, but I don't know a way to change Steam's default port setting.

My bet is your work has blocked out all gaming related ports.

You probably won't be able to get around that. Our IT does the same stuff...blocked out a bunch of websites and IRC. I've never tried to get games working...far too busy...but I would bet they are blocked too. THOSE BASTIDS!!! :)

I have a question about my steam connection. i just downloaded steam onto my computer, have played CS a few days now... and all the sudden, starting today, i couldnt keep a connection to any server. after a few minutes it would disconnect me and say "client timed out." can someone please help me out?

Veritech
if you are getting a client timeout, chances are it is your comp doing something like not sending the packets out, but it could also be your router and/or any server inbetween your comp and the game server. try to powercycle your modem, then do a tracert to the game server you are playing on. Do multiple tracert's to see if it is your comp or not. If its your comp you will not get anything but *** for the addresses in the tracert router won't even show up. but look for the *** to show potential problems in your network path.

Martin, I know of no way to change the ports steam uses to connect, unless you are really good and hex editing programs, but if you change the client software port, the steam servers would not be listening on said new port for connections I would think.
