View Full Version : Problems with CS-S anybody have any ideas?
lillimaginaryfriend
Hi, long time no speak hope everybody is well :D
Was wondering if anybody had any clues on what to do with this problem, any advice would be much appreciated :)
Before I brave the steam forums I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask in here first, (little intimidated by the steam forums)...
Problem is even though halflife2 plays fine with no problems it won't let me play CS-S, I get on the server and it crashes sometimes it crashes my whole machine... if I just try and play the game by creating own server and just play with bots itll do the same.
When I first go into it it'll boot me out straight away and I get the standard error message, then do I want to send report etc.
I'll repeatedly try and get in and each time itll let me stay on a little longer, first letting me choose teams then boot me out... then itll let me get to the buy menu then boot me out.. then let me get one kill in or end of a round then boot me out. It always boots me out though, ive uninstalled and installed steam, ive tried turning off firewall and antivirus and still the same happens.
Has anybody got any idea at all whats happening or what I can try, would it help if I looked for latest drivers for my motherboard or go back a driver for my graphics card? It has problems updating my sound card drivers would that have anything to do with it? got my head done in.
Thankyou :)
ETA this is the only game I have problems with
Mr.
hi there, it has been a while.
What is the error message that you get? They're not all the same.
First thing to check would be to make sure that you have the latest drivers for you video card.
Scan your comp for spyware and other crap (www.lavasoftusa.com for Ad-Aware, and spybot search and destroy is also good).
Clean up the registry (Crapcleaner.com).
Might have to reinstall CS:S if none of those works.

Hi thanks for your reply tis much appreciated:) Ive had this problem for a while ive reformatted 3 times since it started and when I install steam again it happens.
I have the latest drivers for my graphics card, im going to look for the latest ones for my sound card in case its that.
Im virus/crap free also... i'll try and attach the error message.

Mr.
Unfortunately that error code refers to problems with your memory, you may have to get some new ones. :(

You may want to try this:

or this:

oh dear... thanks so much for that, at least ive got some sort of idea now... Ive just recently put new memory in taking it up to 1GB.. but was having this problem before that.... ive got a feeling that it might be tied in with me losing graphical signal to my monitor on occasion which probably isn't good.(everything plugged in ok)
Well my warranty runs out today so im fully expecting it to be a hardware problem. :( you've been a big help thankyou for the links and your help :)
Mr.
Yeah, sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings. :(
Well, on a good note, it's probably your old memory that is failing so the new sticks you put in should be fine. I would try removing your old stick and moving your new stick to the first position and seeing if the problem still occurs. Not to be patronising but are you sure the new stick is compatible with your mobo/system?
Did you try any of the diagnostic tests? I'd be interested to hear the results. Memtest86 is the simpler test so I would go with that one first.

Thankyou :).. i'll be posting the results of memtest, im curious myself. i'll be doing that test tommorow when the kids are back at school and ive got some peace.
Im going to try and swap the ram round and see if it sorts the problem out (well im going to wait until my pal comes over to do it :D).. the new stick is definitly compatible. Im hoping since the problem started before I bought the new memory that its the origional stick that was in when my machine got built. I only have two sticks in.
Itll be nice to be playing again... had to be that game didn't it.
After months of this problem its nice to have somthing to work with.. you've been a big help :)

Well just a wee update... tested all of my hardware and it doesn't look like its a hardware problem :D swapped ram around etc... everythings pointing to a software problem, which is a relief. So, going to flatten my machine and install halflife2 before anything else and then test it... if it runs ok its a case of testing all of my programs one by one and seeing which one of the mofo's is causing the problem.
If it still has the same problem then im going to assume that its something to do with steam... hopefully the latest update will have solved most of the problems.

Well I got it working, my graphics card is acting itself a bit and having to test the game everytime I install something which is a pain.. but its working :D I have a pal coming down with his machine and we're going to test all the hardware, honestly thing things you go through lol
Mr.
heh, I'm glad to see it'w working! :)

Well it got there... apparently it was my webcam that was causing all the bother... honestly, the damn things had me demented for ages and it was something like that.
Still its sorted now.. just have to sort out my mic problems and then can have a proper game :D
Thanks loads for the help, is much appreciated :)
