View Full Version : Microsoft Windows Home Server: WTF??!!

Techies, geeks, and do-it-yourselfers have been doing this for years. They've taken a junk PC, install Windows, install some web serving engine like Apache or Abyss, and hosted a web server from home. Some even have foresakened Windows and simply installed Linux --which comes with Apache.

This has been the case since DSL and Cable broadband services became common place and reliable during the mid-1990's.

Suddenly...almost 10 years later...Bill Gates, in all his LACK of wisdom, innovation and forethought, suddenly became enlightened and got the idea of having a Windoes product that can be a web server capable of serving web pages and media content.

The press said Microsoft apparently noticed the statistics of homes commonly having more than one computer, downloading lots of music and video, and using more than one digital camera and thought this would be a good idea.

This product, known as the Windows Home Server, also has the capability of doing workstation back ups and utilizing multiple HD storage devices as one, contiguous volume.

For around $190 (give or take 10 bucks depending where you buy it) you can purchase an OEM CD.

I don't think so, BILL!! Though it may be true common and regular Window boxes (2000 Pro and XP) do not come with web server software and the ability to host media files, good people with true forethought have developed a multitude of Web serving software applications that works with Windows (such as Apache, XServer and Abyss). PHP and MYSQL was developed to be X86 friendly. Last but not least but most importantly, someone developed the Unreal Media Server, and its FREE!!

So take your Billy-come-lately, Windows Home Server and (insert expletives here, many of them).

I guess the Linux community panicked and over reacted by starting their own home server projects. Ubuntu home server and Amahi home server projects were started to respond to M$'s latest punch. At the very least, M$'s move helped to get people off their butts and inspire them with the spirit of competition.

Ah Ha! Just heard from a friend about another piece of software called Tversity. Tversity happens to be another FREE software that can install on any Windows box, and you can play video or audio media, and view it on Xbox 360, Wii or PS3 if they are connected to the network.

Niiiiiiice....
