you might be overheating your rig, did you try to OC it?
AlloY
NO, i dont even know how to overclock it...... why would i need to overclock a 3.06
Tr32k
why wouldnt you? your bios should show your temp and there are programs to check that but I cant remember what its called, im sure someone in here knows one. it could be the reason its ****in up and its easy to check, so ya.

Alloy:
It could be a memory issue....usually if it is a heat issue, your computer will simply reboot.
Memory issue usually leads to lock up. Are you running the latest drivers on your nvidia? If not, I would suggest checking into that.
I would get Sandra 2005 and do a burn-in test on your memory and see what happens.

Make sure all your drivers (especially your video card) are up to date.
Does it lockup every time you play? What about in single player Half Life 2 mode?
Mr.
Is it only HL2 that locks up? How about regular CS?
MartinX
Alloy this is what I suggest to you:
1. Clean you components from dust, take out memory clean slots, take out you video card same thing. Make sure there is no dust anywhere. The reason I say this is because dust conticts electric current and might cause computer to do wierd things. Once i fix my probl;em by doii=ng very good cleanup.
2. Uninstall your video card drivers, and install fresh driovers. DO NOT INSTALL NEWER DRIVERS OVER OLD, UNINSTALL OLD FIRST RESTART AND INSTALL NEW THEM RESTART AGAIN.
3. MAKE SURE WINDOWS, DIRECTX AND OTHER ARE UP TO DATE.
4. RUN VIDEO TEST USING CSS OR HL2 and seee what software suggest for you specs.
5. If any of the adove dont work, uninstall STEAM (complete uninstal) and install fresh copy of steam.
6. If any of the above dont work, look for directions how to get to Sears Tower and dispose your pc of the roof.
Good Luck

I suggest buying a real pc, not the toaster oven thing you have :D ........other than that, I think everyone has pretty much covered everything, it sounds like a driver issue, so I'd start there.

If you want your pc to treat you right, you need to treat it right. Some sweet loving usually makes mine happy.

Alloy,
A few questions...
1) Has this always happened with CS:S, or is this a new problem... were you able to play source with no problems before?
2) Are you able to play any other games without difficulty?
yes, generally, if it's a heat issue, your computer will reboot, but not all the time.. for example, if the vid card is overheating, you might experience hang-ups.
MartinX gave some good advice (although I wouldn't go tossing your rig off roof tops just yet.) I recommend you try a "burn-in" test.. go to http://www.download.com and in the search box, type in: "burnin". A utility called "BurnIn Test 2.3" will show up in the results. It's free to try, so download it and run the default series of tests.. this app attempts to beat the hell out of your RAM, CPU, HDD, video card, sound card, etc.. Let it run for a while and see what happens... If there are hardware issues, they can sometimes be found in this manner..
Otherwise, update all of your drives.. not just your video card, sound card, (don't forget to update your chipset drivers!)
Lastly, gauge how well your OS install performs overall.. do you find that you need to reboot frequently because your windows installation freaks out after a day or two? Have you had problems with virus', worms, etc in the past (your computer, not you)? These can wreak havoc on an install.. If you think your OS install is a little shaky, it might be high time to wipe it and reinstall windows.. For rigs that are used for consistent gaming, I have found that a good rule is to wipe and reload roughly once a year, in order to keep optimal levels of performance..
Hope this helps...

yea, well. What they said......

I play cs 1.6 all the time, and it never happened to me, I might need to update the drivers though.. I had my dad blow out my computer.. so there shouldn't be any dust in it. I haven't tried it since he's done that. It ONLY happens on CS:S... I haven't tried half life2 yet, I dont have much free time. But I dont think that it is a temperature problem.. BUDDHA.. Cuz it happens right when i turn on my computer, and go into cs:s... But thanks for all the advice, i'm gonna go update my drivers

Source/Half Life 2 can be a real bastard, my brand new Athlon 64 with nothing else installed, and all drivers up-to-date, still ocassionally just shuts down for no apparent reason. It'll run for days on end with no problems...the just turn off when Source is loaded. Sometimes it happens right away, sometimes after I've bene playing for an hour + and sometimes not at all.
Half Life 2 - the best selling beta release of all time:cool:
OweN
i suggest going back to 1.6:o
