View Full Version : Cell Phones/Service Providers

I'm shopping around, considering a switch in my phone and possibly carrier. I've been with Sprint for 5+ years. My phone is maybe 2 - 3 years old. It's a Sanyo SCP-5150. I'm looking at upgrading to the Treo 650. My cell phone is my only phone, so coverage and reliability are top priority.

To anyone out there in the Chicago land area...what phone do you have, who's your provider & what do you think of their service?

I have VerizonWireless, for two years with VW so far, I like their service, covarage is very good, and they have Treo 650 I think. I had ATT before for 2 years and they sucked. I heard that nextel is good but very expensive. Eye get Veriozn Wireless free two week trial. I like veriozon because their serice is in areas that you wouldnt expect.

I'll have to check and see if they support the Treo 650...I really have my heart set on that phone. It's pricey, but dear god does it have features.

I have both Verizon and Sprint. The one thing that I like about Verizon, is that most "roaming" doesn't necessarily mean roaming charges. Whereas with Sprint, if you are in roaming, you're getting hit for .40 a minute. I know alot of people have been coming in for the Treo's, i've only seen 2 come back, and we swapped them out on the spot. But like I said, Verizon's coverage, while not all digital, is still more thatn Sprint's (shhhh, dont tell my boss I'm saying this).

i've had verizon for 2 years now and they are very good. but i guess you should be looking for whoever has coverage for that phone you want... right? cause regardless of the reliability or coverage, you're going to want that phone. :)

I have quite a few phones and service with verizon, t-mobile, and until recently cingular.

If you're buying a phone for the feature set, buy an unlocked GSM phone off of ebay and change your provider as needed. You'll probably be happiest, though it may cost you more (no free phone), but you have the most flexibility with changing carriers.

I don't like verizon because their "get-it-now" portal is just a huge money cow for them. You pay .25 for every picture/ringtone you send yourself via e-mail and verizon phones have the file upload feature set disabled, so you have no choice but paying for every transaction (or hacking your phone so you can upload things via usb or bluetooth).

I've been happy with t-mobile's service and portal, but it's 100% gsm, so it may not work in some parts of the country. T-mobile will unlock your phone after 90 days of service if you ask them to.

Cingular /AT&T is supposed to have the best coverage, and is a mix of GSM and TDMA, so you have a decent selection of phones to choose from.
